    Category: News |

Namaskar ,  it has started from today , the 22nd of November,as part of Virasat 2011 and will continue till 27th November ,exposing hundreds of Bangalore students to this very unique dance form , which is Manipur’s contribution to add to the list of Classical Dances of India. This ‘ Pung Cholom’ troupe comprises of tweleve dancers ,the youngest of them being 8 years and the oldest one being a 13 years old ,and you come to know that they are not ‘kids’ when its time for action with their  ‘Pungs’ on shoulder and bodies defying gravity, their Guru , Shri S. Shinghajit himself a young man of 27 years, is a well known artist , a ‘Young Artist Scholarship’ recipient from the Govt. Of India and a ‘Dr. Ambedkar National Award’ winner , also has performed at numerous events all over the country, his teaching these young students is a message in itself, that our art-forms will not die and they are in safe hands, something which SPICMACAY has always stood for, since its inception.

Now, since we are talking about Manipur , let me share an interesting information with you , which i came to know from ,who else but Doordarshan:

Legend has it that Godess Parwati was fascinated by Raaslila of Krishna and the Gopis in Vrindavan , and She asked Shiva if they could also do something like that …Shiva had to find a place on earth for this purpose , and he found what we now know as Manipur, named after the great serpent, who had a Mani on his head and offered this land to his deity Shiva. This ‘Raas’ played by Shiva and Parwati is the ‘Vasant Raas’ of Manipur, and that place on earth came to be called as our very lovely  ‘Manipur’
