19 January 2010
The audience at NCL auditorium, who were awaiting the concert by Padma Bhushan T.N.Krishnan with child-like eagerness were completely mesmerized by his soul-stirring and captivating violin performance. He was accompanied by the Mridamgam maestro Shri Guruvayur Dorai and the Ghatam exponent Shri Vaikom Gopalakrishnan. The concert was organised by NCL-IISER as part of the ongoing Heritage series 2010 conducted by SPIC MACAY in association with ICCR.
The concert began with a short and melodious alapana in Hamsadhwani raga. This was followed by the famous song in praise of Lord Ganesha composed by Saint Mutthuswami Dikshitar - ‘Vaatapi Ganapathim’. The next item was a beautiful composition in the raga Saramati, composed by Saint Thyagaraja - ‘Mokshamu Galada’. The third item was an excellent rendition in raga Kalyani of Ragam Thanam Pallavi – one of the most complete aspects of Carnatic Music exposing the immense depth of knowledge of the performer. This also included solo performances by the percussionists, a part called ‘tani avartanam’. The next item that followed was a light classical song ‘Jagadoddhaarana’ in raga Kapi composed by Saint Purandara Dasa. .The concert was concluded by a fast beat composition.
The audience was swaying to the melody and taala in complete synchrony. The aura set was perfect to get lost in the intricacies and depths of Carnatic music. His renditions truly reflected his mastery over the violin which he has been playing since the age of eight. He performed the swara kalpana (improvisations) using many dextrous bowing techniques with unsurpassed control and pace. The talent and skill, unleashed by the percussionists during the tani avartanam held the audience spell bound. The audience showed their appreciation and awe for the splendid performance with a standing ovation.
After the concert, all the volunteers had a rare opportunity to interact with T.N. Krishnan-ji during dinner organised by NCL-IISER at the NCL guest house.

21st January, 2010
On the evening of 20th January, the audience at BVP Law College were treated to an enthralling performance by the Kathak and Odissi exponent Smt. Yogini Gandhi and her disciples. The concert was conducted as a part of the ongoing Heritage 2010 series organised by SPIC MACAY in association with ICCR.
Before the concert began, Smt. Yogini Gandhi gave a short introduction about the eight different classical dance forms of India. The dance performance then began with a ‘Mangala archana’, offering prayers to the Lord and Mother Earth and saluting the audience. The second item to follow was a ‘Pallavi’ in Raga Saveri and Talamalika (an assortment of talas). This performance completely expounded the various subtle and intricate steps of Odissi. The final item, the highlight of the concert, which held the audience spell-bound was an ‘Abhinaya’. The theme of the song was heartrending tale of Maula, the son of a Hindu mother and Muslim father who was barred entry into the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Puri Jagannath. In this piece, many mythological tales from ancient India hailing the Lord and praying for salvation were expressed in a very emotive manner. The grace and expressional clarity displayed by Smt. Yogini Gandhi mesmerized the audience. This dance piece encompassed all the ‘nava-rasas’ (nine elements)
Apart from captivating the audience with the majestic performance, she also explained the subtleties and nuances of Odissi. The characteristic features of Odissi such as the ‘Tribhangi’ and ‘Chauk’ were explained in a manner that reached out to the audience and was easy to understand.
According to her, one does not need to understand the intricate details of a classical art form to enjoy it. It is just enough to experience the art form and the beauty unfolds itself. The youth of today are under the false illusion that the Indian Classical art forms are difficult to understand and pursue. But she broke this common myth and inspired the whole lot of the younger generations to take Classical arts a step further.
