  2. 21st January, 2010

On the evening of 20th January, the audience at BVP Law College were treated to an enthralling performance by the Kathak and Odissi exponent Smt. Yogini Gandhi and her disciples. The concert was conducted as a part of the ongoing Heritage 2010 series organised by SPIC MACAY in association with ICCR.

Before the concert began, Smt. Yogini Gandhi gave a short introduction about the eight different classical dance forms of India. The dance performance then began with a ‘Mangala archana’, offering prayers to the Lord and Mother Earth and saluting the audience. The second item to follow was a ‘Pallavi’ in Raga Saveri and Talamalika (an assortment of talas). This performance completely expounded the various subtle and intricate steps of Odissi. The final item, the highlight of the concert, which held the audience spell-bound was an ‘Abhinaya’. The theme of the song was heartrending tale of Maula, the son of a Hindu mother and Muslim father who was barred entry into the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Puri Jagannath. In this piece, many mythological tales from ancient India hailing the Lord and praying for salvation were expressed in a very emotive manner. The grace and expressional clarity displayed by Smt. Yogini Gandhi mesmerized the audience. This dance piece encompassed all the ‘nava-rasas’ (nine elements)

Apart from captivating the audience with the majestic performance, she also explained the subtleties and nuances of Odissi. The characteristic features of Odissi such as the ‘Tribhangi’ and ‘Chauk’ were explained in a manner that reached out to the audience and was easy to understand.

According to her, one does not need to understand the intricate details of a classical art form to enjoy it. It is just enough to experience the art form and the beauty unfolds itself. The youth of today are under the false illusion that the Indian Classical art forms are difficult to understand and pursue. But she broke this common myth and inspired the whole lot of the younger generations to take Classical arts a step further.
