SPIC MACAY is beginning its Virasat 2011 series in Delhi and all over the country in over 300 cities from 1st September and will continue till December 30th. In this series, various modules of our rich cultural heritage will be presented in schools and colleges. It will comprise of classical music and dance, folk, talks, film classics, workshops and intensives of crafts, yoga and meditation, holistic food and walks to heritage sites. About 3000 events will be conducted in India and abroad.
The inauguration of Delhi Virasat will be on 1st September at Miranda House College from 5pm onwards. The programme will begin with the Santoor recital of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma accompanied by Pt. Ram Kumar Mishra on Tabla. It will be followed by Vocal recital of Vidushi Girija Devi accompanied by Pt. Mithilesh Kumar Jha on Tabla, Shri Murad Ali on Sarangi and Smt. Paromita Mukherjee on Harmonium. There will also be an invocation recital by Panchvadyam Artistes from Kerala before the programme. The Chief Guest of the event is Smt. Gursharan Kaur and Smt. Sheila Dixit will be the Guest of Honour.
Other great maestros who will be performing in the series of Delhi Virasat series are Pt. Birju Maharaj, Us. Abdul Rashid Khan, Dr. T. N. Krishnan, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. Rajan & Pt. Sajan Mishra, Pt. Vishwamohan Bhatt, , Smt. Malavika Sarukkai, Guru Kalamandalam Gopi, Pt. Venkatesh Kumar, Smt. Ashwini Bhide Deshpande. Folk performances of Smt. Teejan Bai (Pandavani), Qutabi Brothers (Qawwali), Sh. Rehmat Khan Langa (Rajasthani) are among others. One of the highlights will be weeklong intensives by Guru Harekrishna Behera & Smt. Kavita Dwibedi (Odissi), Smt. Rani Khanam (Kathak) and Smt. Shanti Devi (Madhubani Painting).
Apart from these events there will be screening of classic films directed by Akira Kurosawa, Satyajit Ray and Ingmar Bergman. Eminent writers such as Namwar Singh and Ashok Vajpayi and Photographer Raghu Rai will give talks. Heritage walks will be conducted to different monuments, museums and National Gallery of Modern Art.
This series has been dedicated to Us. R. Fahimuddin Dagar, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Sh. M.F Hussain, Us. Asad Ali Khan, Sh. Mani Kaul, Us. Mehmood Dhaulpuri.
Virasat will aim at inspiring the younger generation and reaching out the varied aspects of our composite heritage to them.
