Kathak
Kathak, a well-known classical dance form, traces its origins to the nomadic bards of ancient North India, known as kathaks, or „story tellers‟. They specialized in recounting mythological stories and their recitals were enhanced with hand gestures and facial expressions. With the advent of Mughal culture, Kathak turned into a form of courtly entertainment for art loving rulers. During the 19th Century, Kathak gained prominence as a classical art form. Gradually, Gharanas or schools of Kathak evolved, the most important of which are the Lucknow, Jaipur and Banaras Gharanas.
The technique of Kathak is characterized by fast rhythmic footwork that matches with the accompanying percussion instruments (tabla or pakhawaj). The dance movements are executed at lightning speed and end in statuesque poses. The interpretative portions, based on tales of Radha and Krishna and other mythological lore contains subtle gestures and facial expressions. Some of the renowned artists include Pt. Birju Maharaj, Smt. Saswati Sen and Su. Sharvari Jamenis
