    Carnatic Violin

The stringed western instrument, Violin, was adopted into Carnatic music in the early 19th century. The South Indian violin is almost identical to the Western violin, but differs from it in tuning and playing position. The fingering technique and the positioning enable the violinist to play the Indian Musical Ornamentations such as the Ghamakas – the most characteristic of South Indian Classical, in an unencumbered way. The Carnatic violin is also a must as a melodic accompaniment, in both instrumental (except for Nadaswaram) and vocal concerts.

One of the renowned artist is Padma Bhushan T.N.Krishnan
